Information &#38;amp; Rules
To ensure the safety of everyone at Hallozeen, all stallholders must understand the following information &#38;amp; agree to the following non-negotiable rules.


Please read through them carefully before deciding if you can commit to tabling at Hallozeen:
•	&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; Submitting a stallholder application does not guarantee you a table at Hallozeen 2026.
•	&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; Stallholders must provide your legal first name, legal surname, email address &#38;amp; phone number in the application form.
•	&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; Only registered stallholders are allowed to table at the fair.
•	&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; Solo zinesters are allocated half a standard-sized trestle table with one (1) chair. A half-table stall allows a maximum of one (1) adult stallholder &#38;amp; cannot be shared.
•	&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; Zine distros are allocated a full standard-sized trestle table with one - two (1 - 2) chairs. Zine distros are allowed a maximum of two (2) adults at their stall.
•	&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; An adult accompanying minors under the age of 16, will be allocated a full table with two - three (2 - 3) chairs. A maximum of one (1) adult &#38;amp; two (2) minors are allowed at their stall.
•	&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; If you have an accessibility request, please send an email to downstairs@stickyinstitute.com after completing the application form.
•	&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; Hallozeen is a zine fair; therefore, 80% of products sold at your table must be zines.
•	&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; T-shirts &#38;amp; food items are not allowed to be sold or traded.
•	&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; No free-standing racks, stands or displays are to be used.
•	&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; Displays set up on the allocated table space are allowed.
•	&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; Candles, incense or open flames are not permitted at stalls.
•	&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; Battery operated fairy lights are fine!
•	&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; Kensington Town Hall has a total ban on the following: open flames, pyrotechnics, glitter and confetti
•	&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; Seating arrangements are pre-allocated &#38;amp; will not be released before the day of the fair.
•	&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; Stallholders are not permitted to swap allocated tables on the day of the fair.
•	&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; We do our best to accommodate any seating requests, but we cannot guarantee anything.
•	&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; Stallholders are responsible for the disposal of their rubbish &#38;amp; paper waste when packing up at the end of the day.
•	&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; Stallholders will not use a power outlet at the venue under any circumstances.
•	&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; No animals of any kind (including dogs) are allowed inside Kensington Town Hall unless they are a trained service animal.&#38;nbsp;
•	&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; Guide dogs and assistance animals are welcome at Kensington Town Hall.
•	&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; All trained service animals at the event must be signed as such &#38;amp; the owner must take full responsibility for its behaviour.
•	&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; Hallozeen is an all ages and sober event. You must not bring or consume any alcohol or drugs at/or during the event.
•	&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; If you smoke or vape, this must take place five (5) metres from any entrance/exit, as per government regulations.
•	&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; If you are feeling unwell, do not attend the fair.&#38;nbsp;
•	&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; Just email or call us to let us know you can't make it. It's cool.
•	&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; If you want someone to run a stall on your behalf you must email downstairs@stickyinstitute.com with the legal first name, legal surname, email address &#38;amp; phone number of the person replacing you. They will be emailed a stallholder form which must be completed to the attend the fair.
•	&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; We cannot accommodate any replacement/swap requests made within 24-hours of the event
•	&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; Anyone not complying with these rules will be asked to leave immediately to ensure the safety of the other stallholders &#38;amp; patrons of the fair.&#38;nbsp;

“History of Hallozeen”


Hallozeen is a Halloween Zine Fair now in its 12th year!It’s a magical time of the year to drum up creative encouragement, make a new zine, and celebrate what everyone’s made together at a communal zine launch.
We’ve seen so many kinds of Halloween-themed zines at Hallozeen over the years. Australia doesn’t have a super established tradition, so it’s a nice broad topic. Hallozeens could be about witchy folklore, anxious autobio, horror movies, pop culture riffs, costumes, death, life, fear... the vibe abounds!
Alex e Clark has been running the event since 2015 and with Sticky Institute since 2017. Each year, more and more zinemakers take the challenge to make something new and halloweeny for Hallozeen. It wouldn’t be possible without everyone who takes part. Thank you for everything.


	It all started back in 2013. 
Ive Sorocuk invited Squishface Studio’s circle of comic artists to make Halloween-themed comics and launch them together at Brunswick Arts Space. I made a comic about a rusalka luring men to the river. The deadline motivated me to completion, the launch rewarded my effort, I felt encouraged. On the night, there was spooky live music, storytelling, cool snacks, and a costume competition. All the comics were sold from one table with the proceeds divided later, so artists and friends could mingle.

There was no Halloween comic launch in 2014. The gallery celebrated its decade anniversary in October with a big exhibition and we were busy with uni degrees.
	In 2015, we held the first Hallozeen. We hosted a costumed life drawing night at our house and took turns dressing up, posing and drawing. We invited friends to make Halloween-themed art and booked the gallery for the weekend; art exhibition opening on the Friday night, zine launch for halloween-themed zines on the Saturday, and second-hand comics sale on the Sunday.

	2016’s Hallozeen was held in a temporary cafe near Jewell station. 
The gallery shut down due to, among other things, constant surrounding construction. The launch was a hot, crowded afternoon. People came in costume and sales were mostly between zinemakers. I filled showbags with one of each zine to encourage bulk purchases and wore the cost.

2017’s Hallozeen was held in Sticky Institute under Flinders Street station. I was dispirited by Brunswick’s accelerating excavation and I didn’t know where I’d find an intact gallery. Beck offered Sticky as a venue. 
Interested passersby dropped in. Hallozeen in the big city felt glamorous. We’d continue to hold Hallozeen with Sticky.

	The eve of the 2018 launch was Hallozingles; a single zinemakers’ evening to make a minizine about themselves and swap copies. I wrote monstrous prompt questions on a red paper tongue rolled up inside a plastic skull. It was alright, but we never did it again. The launch had 18 artists, double the previous year.

	The 2019 launch featured a big spread of halloweeny snacks. Ive and I married one week after Hallozeen. Busy and exhausting but entirely within character.

	For the 2020 lockdown, Hallozeen was online. I recorded video interviews with zinemakers, solicited featurettes, zine readings, and musical numbers for a video premiere. Ive “Sir Ive” Sorocuk made the poster / banner image. Zinemakers sent in their hallozeens as PDFs and we hosted them on itch.io/hallozeen/2020. It lacked a mechanism for profit, but preserved the social, creative exercise.

	2021 was a big year. (Seventh hallozeen, lucky 7) Sticky’s major zine fair, Festival of the Photocopier, ran online. Beck organised a postal zineswap to exchange 10 copies of a new zine for an assortment of 10 in return.Beck later ran the same system for Hallozeen. The submission deadline was weeks earlier so they’d receive their assortments by Halloween. It was everything I’d wanted Hallozeen showbags to be with much more finesse.

Hallozeen was planned to run entirely online. Sam assembled Hallozeen collage kits for mail order. I taught zoom workshops for collaborative zinemaking. I hosted Hallozeen Hotline to video call zinemakers about their Halloween feelings and Ive edited them all down to 3 hours. I built an online zine fair gather.town with table information for 53 zinemakers’ new hallozeens (including international artists).
In August, restrictions eased and Sticky was obligated to spend their year’s funding running a physical zine fair. We collaborated on organising the event. Emily N3ver made the poster. Mission to Seafarers was booked because we were captivated by the Norla Dome. 2021 was the first Hallozeen where each zinemaker had their own table. We launched the online content on the Saturday and the zine fair on the Sunday. We had 53 artists worldwide and 26 tabled at the fair.

Hallozeen 2022 (8th year, spider year) Beck ran the postal zine swap again. Helen “Juimon” Graham made the poster. Liz and Zoe installed a dark, ominous haunted house in Sticky Institute with glowing graffiti wall inside. I held 2 workshops leading up to the fair; monster-maker zines and a collaborative tarot deck zine. I was still enjoying catching up with zinemakers, so Ive and I made another interview compilation. With social distancing eased, 61 zinemakers tabled at Mission to Seafarers, the biggest Hallozeen yet!
Hallozeen 2023 (ca-ninth, dog year) attracted 101 table applications and we fit 59 zinemakers at tables for the one day zine fair at Mission to Seafarers. Jack “Arkham Jack” Ioannou makes the poster. I ran Dogbox where people could submit pages to a collab zine and on Hallozeen fair day, I wore the dog as a costume and exchanged copies of the dogbox collab zine for hallozeens (contributors got a dogbox zine copy gratis). In the beloved Norla Dome, it was hard to hear each other properly and zinemakers there were pretty removed from the main hall vibe of the rest of the tablers. It’s a fun building but the extremely thematic and charming nooks and crannies-ness meant some people didn’t visit the connecting rooms because they didn’t know they were there, or couldn’t easily travel between the heritage steppy bluestone sections without arranging for the portable wheelchair ramps to arrive.
2024 Hallozeen, the Decayed Decade (skeleton year) was held at Kensington Town Hall. The venue was good and clear and ramped and brightly lit and chandeliered. Sticky handles the administrative / bureaucratic / technical legwork acquiring the support of City of Melbourne and organising the venue. 1 (Alex) run the hallozeen instagram and populate this website and take my stash of hallozeens on a tour of outer Melbourne libraries so people can meet the hallozeens. I also draw the skeleton poster.
2025 Hallozeen, eleventh year (legs eleven) We returned to Kensington Town Hall. The poster was by Beau Parsons. Sticky Institute had a whole workshop space next to their shop opposite queen vic market. We had a house shaped dropbox.

Epilogue:
I enjoy goading so many zinemakers into making the kind of zines I like. I have an accordion file for each year’s Hallozeens, but the cohort making new zines since 2022 has been too unwieldy for me to acquire every new zine!
Hallozeen’s an achievable challenge. Succeeding at the challenge is an important element in planning Hallozeen each year. Workshops where collaborative zines are made in the span of a few hours are less time investment and more entry level. People should leave Hallozeen excitedly planning what they’re going to make next for Sticky’s Festival of the Photocopier 4 months away.

We asked some zinemakers what they reckon Halloween is all about.

Thy O’Donnell:Halloween growing up was a fantastic affair, I grew up overseas in Singapore and Cambodia with a large amount of American friends that went ALL out. We would do scavenger hunts on tuk tuks (a Cambodian taxi/carriage thing pulled by a motorbike) that we decorated. I got started in Halloween because my friend did it &#38;amp; dressing up is fun! Halloween nowadays means staying in, decorating the house &#38;amp; scaring children. We do trick or treating in my neighbourhood which has been slowed down due to COVID-19. Sometimes I’ll go to a party but I’m not really into that kind of thing. 
Gemma Randall:Halloween's sort of an odd holiday for Australia, culturally speaking. We haven't been colonised long enough to amass much of a folk mythology to frame the holiday around, not to mention the seasonal disparity. I used to roll my eyes at shops attempting to sell Halloween-themed stuff, but they reeled me in eventually. Now it's the highlight of the calendar year for me.
I first started to participate in Halloween one big movie night in year 11 or 12. Halloween's the best time of year to watch creepy movies with your buds. Not everyone's going to enjoy a marathon of the Conjuring movies, but more approachable movies that play with the concepts of horror like Coraline or Monster House will provide a good laugh and good atmosphere.These days, I love making my own decorations! I tend to amass cardboard packaging, so I'll cut out garlands of ghosts and pumpkins, and I have a big green spider for my front door. It's a bit more environmentally friendly than buying plastic decorations, and a low-pressure way to flex your creative muscles.


Michelle Harford:I like that in normally holds back the tide of christmas decorations. But I'm growing to love the dress up and decoration aspects. It reminds me of a kind of macabre masquerade ball, which I'm here for. Jack o’ lanterns are rather cute.

	Tash:We had friends from Canada that introduced us to the holiday in the 90s as teens, we would walk around with our younger siblings but few people knew what we were doing.. one fella wrapped a biscuit in tin foil and made out they were miniature ufos as he 'flew' them into their sacks. I thought that was a cool quick-thinking fix! Prior to that we never celebrated but movies like Hocus Pocus and The Craft were watched repeatedly. Now our kids help us each yr prepare for the potential of trick or treaters by tracing outlines of each other's bodies on the crossover/footpath/road with chalk and splatter with food colouring or beetroot juice for added effect. We usually watch episode's of Monster Squad (daggy old teleseries) and eat pop rocks, sherbet and pez.
Alex:&#38;nbsp;Halloween has weirdly shallow roots in Australia and a bizarre seasonal backdrop. End of October falls between local Wurundjeri seasons Poorneet and Buarth Gurru; a festering wet warmth. When orchids unfurl from the sodden earth, air thick with choking pollen, to the cries of baby bats and baby owls.It can be about the scary and absurd. It can be filled with anxiety and fear and ritual and history and making up the monsters you need. Halloween in an antipodean immigrant nation? It’s ALL untethered plasticity. I like that Australian Halloween REQUIRES improvised creative control. Do you loathe “American” Halloween? Capitalist / Globalist Halloween? What do YOU think Halloween should be? We get to name our terms!
Zinemaking CAN be a therapeutic act, seeing an internal hurricane laid out on finite pages; cutting and pasting, expounding and redacting. I love making zines to digest unresolved fixations. Every year, there’s something I’ve got to get off my chest; some research hole I’m stuck in, pictures I have to draw, ideas I have to articulate and see arranged in order. What a good season to expel something weird and unsightly and surprising. We run each Hallozeen to foster a fruitful zinemaking harvest, the Halloween theme is just a prompt to get you going.

Zine must be:
Halloween themed
Made new for the swapValued at $3AUA5 size or smallerFlat (no lollipops / cassettes / etc)


Please include your name and email address on a piece of paper with the zines for the swap. If Sticky doesn't know who someone is, Sticky can't match them to an address.

You must register via the form, if Sticky can't match the name to the list it doesn't count.


Postal Deadline:Friday 25th September 202610 copies must be sent to:Sticky InstitutePO Box 310Flinders LaneVIC 8009 AustraliaDo not send packages to the store.&#38;nbsp;The shop has no mail slot and also the postal service doesn't go down there. Anything sent to the physical shop will be considered lost and Sticky will not dedicate any time trying to look for it.
Delivery Deadline:Friday 9th October 2026Hand 10 copies to the volunteer at the desk and tell them it is “for the swap”.

Receiving your zine packYou will be notified by email when your assorted zine pack is available for collection from Sticky Institute. Packs are expected to be available to collect from Saturday 24th October.
Uncollected zine packsAfter 5pm Saturday 7th November, any uncollected zine packs will be mailed to the mailing address provided at the time of sign up to the Hallozeen Swap.&#38;nbsp;</description>
